Behavioral addictions involve patterns of behavior that mimic those related to drug addiction. These addictions begin with a person getting pleasure from a certain behavior and seeking that pleasure repeatedly, so much so that the person may require the activity to feel normal. Although this type of addiction begins with an activity rather than a drug, behavioral addictions can be just as devastating. Jobs that put people into tempting situations can make addiction difficult to overcome.

Casino Jobs and Gambling Addiction

One of the most common and devastating behavioral addictions is gambling addiction. Compulsive gamblers bet uncontrollably, often resulting in career loss, loss of family and even homelessness. For a person who struggles with a gambling addiction, working in a casino can be devastating. People who work in casinos are constantly faced with the temptation to gamble, so they may immediately spend their wages on gambling machines or other games, leaving nothing to pay bills and support a family. Casino jobs, even those indirectly connected to gambling like serving food and drinks, put those struggling with this behavioral addiction in a dangerous environment.

Retail Jobs and Shopping Addiction

Another behavioral addiction that affects many people is an addiction to shopping. Shopping addicts spend money they do not have and run up credit card debt they cannot pay. The addiction is to the behavior of wanting items they see and buying them, even if they do not need them or never use them. Working a retail job can be a devastating career for someone with a shopping addiction. Most retail employees get an employee discount, which makes the temptation to buy even stronger. Retail employees identify items they wish to purchase during a shift, and may end up spending an entire paycheck in the store where they work. Working in retail for the shopping addict is like working in a bar for the alcoholic.

Internet Jobs and Pornography Addiction

People who have Internet-based jobs and struggle with pornography addiction are putting themselves in a difficult position for recovery. Pornography is readily available on the Internet and without on-the-job accountability people addicted to porn face an uphill battle. This is especially true for those who are self-employed or work from home. Getting help for this type of addiction may include a career change or finding a way to work in public settings.

Video games often use compelling storylines, implied risk, violent images, music, flashing lights and even sexually explicit imagery to create immersive entertaining experiences. Modern games combine the perceived risk of gambling, the fear of virtual death, the thrill of survival and the emotional grip of a good movie to pull the gamer in. Hardcore gamers often relate stories of having played a game for hours on end with no concept of time. These games can be extremely entertaining, but as with so many aspects of our modern culture they can also be addictive to certain people.

Identifying Video Game Addiction

The line between enjoyment of gaming and addiction can be hard to distinguish, but if any of the following symptoms describe your experience, reconsider your relationship with video games:

Gaming occupies your thoughts when not playing

Loss of interest in previously important people and activities in favor of gaming

Significant amount of time spent playing even if work, school or relationships are suffering

Symptoms of depression or anxiety when unable to play

Gaming addiction has cost people their jobs, their education, their important relationships and their physical health. If you have ever told yourself you were going to quit gaming or cut back significantly but found that you just have to play, you may be addicted.

Risks of Untreated Video Game Addiction

If left untreated, gaming addiction can have similarly devastating effects as sex addiction, compulsive lying, shoplifting, gambling or other behavioral addictions. Serious carpal-tunnel disease or other repetitive stress injuries are part of the physical risk associated with extreme gaming. As with any behavior that gets out of control gaming addiction can lead to embarrassment and depression. Untreated video game addiction will not end on its own, and the consequences will grow.

There are many types of eating disorders. What many people may not be aware of is that eating disorders are not just limited to teenaged girls and young women. There has been a sharp increase in the numbers of eating disorders seen in men, and eating disorders are becoming more varied for women and men.

While many of us strive for fitness, there is a big difference between a fit lifestyle and an exercise addiction. A combined addiction and eating disorder can be life-threatening if not addressed in a timely manner.

The Dangers of Eating Disorders

There are many well-known dangers of eating disorders, but the dangers of over-exercising are not as commonly known. These dangers increase when an exercise addiction is combined with the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The following are just some of the dangers that exercise and abuse of non-steroid performance enhancing drugs can cause:

Decreased sex drive

Fertility issues

Dehydration

Heart disease

Increased risk of blood clots

Kidney damage

Development of Type II diabetes

Sports-related injury

Muscle wasting

When steroids are combined with compulsive exercising, the risks increase dramatically. An exercise addiction may seem like a laughing matter, as exercise is an important part of a healthy life, but when a person is restricting calories, using drugs and working out in excess, you have the perfect combination for a dangerous situation.

Signs of Eating Disorders and Steroid Abuse

Some of the signs of a combination of steroid addiction and an eating disorder include the following:

Acne, skin problems or rashes

Obsessing over spending excessive amounts of time at the gym working out

Restricting calories or limiting food choices

Thinning of hair on the head

Increase of body hair

Mood swings that may lead to aggression or psychotic episodes

Dangerous electrolyte imbalances

These are only a few of many signs, as the signs of an eating disorder vary greatly between individuals and between men and women.
